Beer is one of the world's oldest beverages: The Sumerians knew it already, Germanic tribes gained strength through it, and still in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia it is a part of today's quality of life.

Simply unique - The "Brauerei Schwelm"

There are only a few areas in Germany where people are as closely connected to "their" brewery as here: Since 1830 premium beer is brewed in the town of Schwelm. In the very heart of this picturesque Westphalian village a source provides crystal clear water - the main ingredient for a good beer. The brewery is not only located in the center of Schwelm, but it was and remains a vital part of the town's lively local culture.

The main building of the "Brauerei Schwelm" is a historical landmark with a long tradition. It was first mentioned in 1701 as the "Rietzsche Haus" - the house of Rietz, who was a former owner of the house - and is one of the oldest buildings still in use in this area. During the 19th century it was purchased by Haarmann & Kathagen, the founders of the brewery, who then built the brewing facilities adjacent to the old baroque house. Until today you can witness the brew master create the unique beer of the "Brauerei Schwelm".

This historic complex, which is also part of the famous "Route of Industrial Culture", is home to the last private brewery in the region. Behind these brown stone walls the traditional art of brewing and the individual appearance of "Schwelmer Bier" are nurtured with great care. A beer with tradition is created, that is well known as a specialty beyond the boundaries of Schwelm.

All types of "Schwelmer Bier" are brewed strictly according to the German "Reinheitsgebot" from 1516 and meet highest quality standards. Despite the commitment to tradition and genuine craftmanship the "Brauerei Schwelm" is at the pace of time: Modern Technology optimizes the brewing process and consistently delivers a high-quality beer. Our beers have won numerous awards and our mission is to keep it that way.

The local entrepreneur Dr. Lohbeck vows for that. After he purchased the brewery in 2001, he invested in a new botteling line, logistics, and storage facilities. This was the ground work for the presentation of the nostalgic flip-top bottle in 2002, which provides a new look to "Schwelmer Brauerei" beer specialties. This combination of historical awareness and innovative ideas is appreciated by beer lovers, who value the typical Schwelmer

"Joy of good taste".
